Why this page starts at 20/0/15
Cursed text usually ends up somewhere short: a nickname, a display name, a status, a gamer tag. At 20 above, 0 through and 15 below, each letter gets 1 to 3 marks on top and 1 or 2 underneath. That is never more than 5 in total, with nothing crossing the letters, so the name stays readable in a member list.
Five is not an arbitrary cap. In our November 2026 test, Discord saved the first 5 marks on every letter of a sent message and threw away the rest (details in our Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp and Slack test). Text made at this setting arrives looking the way it did in your message box. The exception is a long message: in the same test, a 20-letter message with 3 marks per letter lost every mark on four of its letters.
How long can a cursed name be?
Discord's developer documentation says nicknames must be 1 to 32 characters. Each combining mark is a separate Unicode character, so if a field counts characters that way, every mark uses up part of the limit. The documentation doesn't say how marks are counted, so read these as a safe plan rather than a guarantee:
• 10/0/10: exactly 1 mark above and 1 below on every letter, so each letter costs 3 characters. "cursed" becomes 18. Names of up to 10 letters fit in 32.
• 20/0/15 (this page's start): 3 to 6 characters per letter. A 5-letter name always fits. Longer names fit only when the random counts land low, so check the length before you save.
• 45/15/45: 4 to 15 characters per letter. Only 2 letters are guaranteed to fit.
For a longer name, curse only part of it. Type the part you want cursed here, copy it, and type the rest of the name plainly around it. Plain letters cost 1 character each.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my cursed nickname get cut off or rejected?
The marks count toward the length. A name that looks 6 letters long can be 30 characters or more underneath. Lower both sliders, or use 10/0/10, where every letter costs exactly 3 characters.
Why does my cursed message change after I press Enter on Discord?
Discord drops every mark after the fifth on a letter as the message is sent, while your message box shows the full text until then. This page's starting setting never puts more than 5 on a letter. If you raised the sliders, bring the total back down, for example 20 above and 15 below. See the test.
Why is the through slider at 0 for names?
Through marks cross the letter itself. In a short name every letter matters, and a stroke through two or three of them makes the name hard to read or type. Marks above and below give the cursed look and leave the letters clear.
Is cursed text just zalgo text with another name?
Technically, yes. "Cursed" is the meme and gaming word for it and usually means a short, ironic name or reaction. "Zalgo" comes from a 2000s horror meme and usually means the heavy, maximal version.
