Glitch vs. zalgo vs. cursed text
Published September 6, 2026
Short answer: they're the same technique. Here's why four different names exist for it.
Glitch text, zalgo text, cursed text, and corrupted text all describe the identical underlying mechanism: normal characters with extraUnicode combining marks stacked above, through, and below them. There's no technical difference between a "zalgo generator" and a "glitch generator" — the marks and the math are the same. What differs is the community and context each name is associated with.
| Name | Where it's used | Connotation |
|---|---|---|
| Zalgo text | Creepypasta/horror communities, the original meme context | Corrupted, possessed, "reality breaking down" |
| Cursed text | Discord, Roblox, Minecraft, gaming usernames | Meme-y, "cursed" as in ironically bad/funny |
| Corrupted text | Glitch-art, aesthetic/design use | Broken data, digital corruption aesthetic |
| Glitch text | General search term, tech/aesthetic framing | Distorted, digital glitch |
Practically, this means you can use any of the four generators on this site interchangeably — they all run the same engine with different default intensity presets tuned to how each name tends to be used (zalgo defaults heavier; cursed defaults lighter for usernames).
