What is glitch text?

Glitch text is ordinary text where every character has extra Unicode combining marksattached to it — small symbols that stack above, through, or below the base letter instead of taking up their own space. Enough of them stacked together and the letter reads as broken, corrupted, or distorted.

It's a text effect, not a font

Despite the common name "glitch font," there's no font file involved. A font changes how existing characters are drawn; glitch text changes which characters are actually present in the string — it adds real, extra Unicode code points. That's why the effect survives being copied and pasted into apps that don't let you change fonts at all, like an Instagram bio or a Discord message.

Where the effect comes from

Combining marks exist in Unicode for ordinary purposes — an accented letter like "é" is technically a base letter plus one combining mark. Nothing in the Unicode standard limits how many combining marks can attach to a single character.
